Quirky indie-popster from London. Likes singalongs and wordplay. AKA Hong Kong Cockney*
Garlen Lo is a born-and-bred Londoner of Hong Kong-Chinese origin. Aged 7 he was raised by a wine-guzzling auntie who played country music at max volume. One Christmas, he got a guitar and took naturally to writing drunken singalongs with twee wordplay.
He formed an unruly, skinny-jeaned indie band in the mid-2000s, but after that imploded, tried to become a respectable member of society. Not quite succeeding at that either (partly due to wanderlust), he resumed his love for songwriting during the pandemic. The result is this.
He is a one-man band: playing all the instruments, singing, producing, and making the music videos. Songs about lost love seems to be his thing. His Mastermind subject would be The Beatles.
*For a short time, he went by the artist name Hong Kong Cockney but lacked the confidence to see it through. He likes it as a nickname though, like Springsteen's The Boss.

SINGLE #10 - Country Boy, Country GIRL
A song about moving to the country… appreciating nature, living healthily, and pursuing passions.
No.4 IN THE RICK SPINS CHART: 'I absolutely love this tune. I really, really do. I think it is such a fun tune. I love it when it goes: ‘Gonna get some chick-ens!’ It’s got a cock-a-doodle-do up in there. Ducks are quacking. Everything about this song is so much fun. I absolutely love it. I like the subject matter. I like the production of it. I can actually picture this song being in a funny movie' - The Rick Spins Show
TRACK OF THE DAY: 'Garlen Lo needs to actually release an album with these type of songs. Wholesome, humorous, homemade songs that are just written to make you smile. He's gone and done it again. This song is packed full of charm, with a lot of wit, farmyard sounds, a fiddle and double bass. You could just imagine Garlen in a country pub where everyone's gathered for a singsong and a dance, but then the one girl who's stolen his heart is in the corner with her friends, and Garlen being the hopeless romantic has made a play for her with this song. I love it!' - Platinum Mind
'Garlen Lo returns with his tenth single, solidifying his unique place in the indie-pop landscape. He's not just a genre-bender, but a storyeller with genuine heart, wit, and musical sensitivity. From the opening bars, this track feels like a breath of fresh air. There's something innately transportive about its gentle strumming, breezy violin lines, and laid-back groove. The result is a track that marries indie-pop charm with country twang and a subtle soulful lilt. He captures the grace of letting go, the courage of starting again, and the enduring power of melody. Ten songs in, this is Garlen Lo at his most assured' - The Other Side Reviews
'Tim and I hit the play button and we looked at each other, our jaws dropped. Quack-quack! Quack-quack! Quack-quack! I can't help it! Your music, your tracks, they do exactly what they're supposed to do, they make you smile. It's a breath of fresh air. It's all feel-good tracks. Whatever you're doing, pal, keep it up' - HUGS 24/7 Radio

SINGLE #9 - London Girls
Like 'California Girls'... but London.
No.1 IN THE HUGS CHART: 'My oh my. I love that track. I wish he could be here to see this because the conversation... Everybody has connected to this track. There's just something about that vibe that he put in there that just kind of... it's kind of an everyman vibe for lack of a better term. I'm just loving the hell out of it. It was not long ago that George Duchow on the HUGS website did a layout review of this thing and I think he hit the nail on the head: 'The unconventional creativeness is undeniable.' I don't care how old you are. I don't care what genre you listen to. This thing will draw you in and when you're done, you're gonna have a smile on your face' - HUGS 24/7 Radio
TRACK OF THE DAY: 'It's 4am. I'm wheezing. Why? Garlen Lo released his new single, and with his usual charm and wit, he's dropped a cracker of a tune, and it's made me chuckle. This starts off with what I can assume is a toy trumpet, because when you hear it, it sets the tone for the whole song. My dude, Garlen Lo, is back and on this cold Tuesday morning he's made me smile' - Platinum Mind
'A breezy, witty, and unapologetically British slice of indie-pop. There's something undeniably charming in ‘London Girls’ – a song that’s as catchy as it is clever. It’s pop with a wink and a pint, full of melodic turns and lyrical nods that could only come from someone who truly gets London. The wit is razor-sharp but never cynical. From references to Ruby Murray (rhyming slang and curry in one), to fart jokes and a 'pull my finger' gag, to a Bruce Forsyth name-drop and the cheeky use of a catchphrase, Lo embraces the daft side of British humour with an almost theatrical glee. Equal parts McCartney, Madness, and Mike Leigh. You half expect your dad to hum along before asking if it's from The White Album. Garlen Lo might be a niche name now, but his blend of observational humour, clever lyricism, and melodic craftsmanship deserves far wider attention' - The Other Side Reviews
'Garlen Lo certainly has the market cornered on quirky, unique and interesting songs. His unconventional creativeness is undeniable and brings a freshness to the music he creates. It's a fun, short song, with a few great melodies, and you just can't help but be happy as a clam at full tide as you hum along and get into the spirit of playfulness that this song has. You may not understand some of the cultural references, but the lyrics make the song intriguing' - HUGS Music Review
'Garlen's a little bit eccentric in his songwriting abilities but he's very talented. His music sounds great and this new one just blew me away. This one's good, Garlen. I like this one... Garlen, I love that song. It sounds great. It's just happy. It's a happy song. I like it. I like the intro. I like everything about it' - Global Indies With Marky
'Garlen Lo is back with a new single. And guess what? It keeps in with his humour. It's very on-brand with what he actually does. It's an ode to girls from London and you're gonna love it. It's hilarious the way he puts his lyrics together' - The Songbird Sessions
'I've been following Garlen for a long time and that, I think, is his breakout song. That's gonna be the one, mouth trumpet and all. So Garlen, I wish you the best. That song is awesome' - London Calling

SINGLE #8 - Pretty Baby
A love song I wrote when I was 17.
TRACK OF THE DAY: 'Garlen Lo is back with his brand of humour and self deprecating lyrics in this song that he wrote at the age of 17. He’s really good at this homemade kind of sound – acoustic guitar recorded to tape and mixed so that you get the feeling he’s trying to break through the limitations of technology. It’s a great audio aesthetic! Add to that the mixing choices – the instruments and vocals are placed so that it calls back to the way the Beatles used to record' - Platinum Mind
'I must admit that before I gave the song a listen I was sceptical. There are many times where a simple chord progression sounds bland or inauthentic, but on this occasion it doesn’t. Knowing ‘Pretty Baby’ was written by a teenager in love, the admittedly corny lyrics give the song a rawness and provides an opportunity for us to reminisce about the euphoria of being young and in love . Having added bass and a perfectly placed solo for this release, ‘Pretty Baby’ feels like a time machine to a forgotten feeling. It’s nostalgic but new. Despite the lyrics evidently being those of a love stricken teen, the ‘Hong Kong Cockney’ really surprised me with his eighth release. Just because something is old doesn’t mean it’s outdated. A joyful singalong, ‘Pretty Baby’ backs this up perfectly. Maybe simple is best after all' - RGM
'He gives it that twee-pop treatment, with his now recognizable tongue-in-cheek lyrics and equally cheeky comment that it is a cross between Sam Cooke and The Moldy Peaches. While Cooke might be hiding somewhere in there, The Moldy Peaches do distinctly come across with just his voice and acoustic guitar, and you realize why it might be the family gathering favourite. At the same time, it shows two things – that Lo has a vast music collection that he can digest so easily, and at the same time, that he can diversify his musical repertoire without missing a note or a beat. A pop/rock force to be reckoned with' - The Other Side Reviews
'Garlen Lo is releasing a song that he wrote when he was 17. And after 20 years of playing it at family gatherings, it's everyone's favourite song, he tells us, he's finally releasing it to the world... If somebody described 'quirky indie-popster', that's the kind of song you'd expect them to write and perform. Nice!' - Wolfman Radio
'What I like about this particular track, is the fact that it's got a kind of homemade feel to it, like it's recorded to tape. And sometimes that's all you need' - The Songbird Sessions
'There is some amazing talent out there and we're certainly hearing plenty of it this evening. That is Garlen Lo and 'Pretty Baby'. Brilliant stuff' - The Flash
'Aww, that was so sweet. That was Garlen Lo and 'Pretty Baby'. A lovely track' - Big Condo Records
'Garlen Lo unearthed a tune he wrote when he was 17 and very smitten' - Here Comes The Flood

SINGLE #7 - I'll Try My Best To Get To You
A happy song about depression.
'London via Hong Kong singer-songwriter Garlen Lo is becoming a sort of a regular here at The Other Side Reviews, not necessarily as a part of some sort of favouritism, but simply because he is continuing to come up with a series of singles that fit so nicely into that bedroom pop sub-genre. The thing with Mr Lo and his singles is that you hear them and they somehow get stuck between your ears and don’t want to leave. Add to that the fact that Lo continues to add his good sense of humour to his lyrics, something that is a bit concealed here, but comes through nonetheless. That concealment lies in the fact that, as Lo describes it himself, this song is 'a happy song about depression' and could be a touchy subject for quite a few listeners; but Lo skates through it with charm and ease, and the good melody (at which Lo is getting better and better) certainly helps' - The Other Side Reviews
'Quirky, refreshing, interesting, eccentric. It’s all those and so many more. It’s not a song that you normally hear in the day-to-day, for sure! It’s simple. But there is something about it that makes it endearing. It could be the imaginative lyrics of ways of always being there for someone, or the use of quaint vocal and instrumental accents used. And it’s unconventionally short, coming in at a fraction over 2 minutes. But no matter what adjective you want to use to describe it, the most important thing to know is that it’s a fun song to listen to' - HUGS Music Review
'Is it posssible to feel good about depression? Well, not really, but London based singer-songwriter Garlen Lo comes close on his new single 'I'll Try My Best To Get To You', sounding chipper against all odds. If anything this song might cheer you up a bit on a bad day, with a toe-tapping dose of brass thrown in for good measure' - Here Comes The Flood
'What I like about Garlen, one of the many things I like about him, is his quirky way of songwriting. Make sure you check out his tracks cause he is a great songwriter and he's got a great sense of humour' - The Songbird Sessions
'Quirky indie-popster from London, Garlen Lo, is back with another great single, ‘I’ll Try My Best To Get To You’. A happy song about depression with a karaoke video. You don’t get many of those!' - Indie Revolution

SINGLE #6 - Sentimental Guy
A midlife reflection song.
VIDEO OF THE WEEK: 'There is something very delightful about this video for Garlen Lo’s track as it tracks his life in photographs from age 0 to his current age of 41. It’s a collage of pictures from all aspects of his life as he grins his way through school, family events, holidays and even sitting next to Benedict Cumberbatch as an extra in a Doctor Strange film. The song is built on an earwormy xylophone riff, or is it glockenspiel (only scientists know the difference)? It bubbles along gently, never obtrusive, but every bit as warm and inviting as the video' - Joyzine
TRACK OF THE DAY: 'Congratulations to Garlen Lo. Well done winning the New Trax Poll today' - Trust The Doc
'Reflecting on one's past never hurts, if only to reappraise the fun times that were had. People don't reach for the camera when things have taken a turn for the worse. Take note of the simple yet highly effective tinkling keyboards' - Here Comes The Flood

When all is said and done
Well I hope you had some fun
In the rain and in the sun

You’re a sentimental guy
Enough to make me cry
When your head is full of doubt
You don’t know if you’re in or out
You can kick and scream about
Even better twist and shout
And they say you have a dream
And the best is to be seen

SINGLE #5 - Brown Paper Ball
A song about writing a love letter... and scrunching it up.
'Assertive in its slightly mannered theatricality, and the bounce and naive head-shakes of early Beatles pop are a clear influence. Multi-instrumentalist Lo is clearly adept at arranging the range of instruments deployed here. It tiptoes towards ‘quirky’ territory but manages to avoid overtly detached ‘archness’ through its strong pop melodic chops that hold the thing together. Lo possesses a particular and exuberant talent and you can feel his enjoyment throughout, as he plays and tinkers with the production details, adding in sound effects and pauses within the pop structure which keep the listener intrigued. The track has an idiosyncratic playfulness all its own that will undeniably raise a smile, and an ear-worm melody that will dance through many a mind once heard' - Start Track
'Flames. That shit's fire as fuck. I loved it. I loved the visual. Dude, you know how much effort went into a video like that? Just beyond ridiculous the level of work that you're doing. It reminds me very, very much me of something you would hear at the beginning of a British dark comedy, like something real fucked up and funny. It's recorded extremely well. He's singing all those parts, doing all those harmonies. Sheesh. Radio ready. Absolutely brilliant' - Spin It Up
'Lo’s seemingly mundane lyrics do have a good meaning and a good sense of humour as he fits it into a melody that starts with simple lines, but then he adds enough interesting elements to make it work as it should. Eventually, he comes up with a nice slice of a bedroom pop to make it fit well into any playlist that has that summery feel' - The Other Side Reviews

SINGLE #4 - Steve Rogers
A song about being a superhero to the one you love... despite having no superpowers.
TOP 5 OF THE WEEK: 'Admirable for its easy-listening quality. The simple structure of the song allows the artist to almost discuss his ideas and stories in more detail and though clever anecdotes. The video is well worth a watch. The work of this indie songwriter makes a refreshing break away from the mainstream' - RGM

VIDEO OF THE WEEK: 'Singer-songwriter Garlen Lo of London has a captivating video for his song, 'Steve Rogers', which is the Flawless Friday Video this week. We love all of the superhero references' - Chasing Destino
'The Lego video's killing it! This video is cool, man. Dylan, Beatle vibe. His harmonies are good. The shit was dope. I'll take the Lego video all day. I'll take the concept all day. And what would be cool, you're at a beach, there's a fire, and this dude is just playing it on guitar. It was so good. The visuals were giving it to me. It was super dope' - Spin It Up
'The thing I love about Garlen Lo's songs is that he loves to tell a story, and when he does, he does it really well. Garlen Lo reels off a whole list of superhero names and then puts himself in those different situations. He's just trying to win a girl's heart. It's pretty simple, pretty sweet' - The Songbird Sessions

🏙️ 'London, Tell Me Why' chords + lyrics
D Dmaj7 D7
Terry, he meets Julie
G Em
But Julie doesn’t show
A D Dmaj7 D7 Dmaj7
Cause love don’t last forever, everybody knows, and now he knows
Friday nights are lonely
Dinner by the phone
Forget about that river now, let that river go, let it flow
Em A
So, London, tell me why, are your people crying
Em A
London, tell me why, should I keep on trying
Em A
You got to let me know, should I stay or should I go
Julie’s feeling seasick
She can’t fight those waves no more
Grab all of your belongings, turn and face the door, don’t wanna fight no more
Now Friday night’s for drinking
At half past four again
Celebrate that sunset, you made it through the day, another day
So, London, tell me why, are your people crying
London, tell me why, should I keep on trying
You got to let me know, should I stay or should I go
Should I stay or should I go
Should I stay or should I go
Should I stay or should I go
Stay or should I go

Let me tell you 'bout a girl I matched on OKC
She was smiling in her photos, that’s a must for me
After several messages about our top five bands and films
and celebrities invited to a dinner party (Thom Yorke)
She asked me for a date near her in a north London park
I played it cool and said, ‘Sure, I know how to get there’
Got off the bus and took a left turn, should a took a right turn, 30 minutes later in the wrong ends
When I finally showed up, I was sweating from my jog
But she was pretty cool, she didn’t give me stroganoff
So we chatted about childhoods, teen-hoods, and a postmodern, sexually fluid, non-normative adulthood
Mono, poly, swing a brolly, bi or queer, straight or gay
Casual, hook up, I’m all shook up, unicorns and anarchy
We’re the generation swiping on Tinder
And I haven’t even mentioned we were socially distanced
CHORUS
She’s a lady lover
She’s a man lover
She’s a lover’s lover
Hold tight
She’s a wine lover
She’s a cat lover
She’s a massage lover
Alright
V2
For a second date (Woop!), I chose the V&A
Looked at some foreign things collected by some old, white males
Tried to impress her with my knowledge of the Empire
But she just shook her head and said that, ‘History is a big liar’
So we continued to a super trendy King’s Cross bar
I asked her questions over cocktails in a jam jar, like
‘How is your child?’ and ‘What are your kinks?’ and
’Is it important what your primary partner thinks?’ (Haha)
She laughed at me until the News at Ten told us to go
Government regulation keeps the R rate low
Back outside I thought to my myself, never met anyone like her
And she must have read my mind, cause she said, ’Is it OK if I kiss ya?’
Mono, poly, swing a brolly, bi or queer, straight or gay
Casual, hook up, I’m all shook up, unicorns and anarchy
We’re the generation swiping on Tinder
And sometimes we don’t follow being socially distanced
CHORUS
She’s a lady lover
She’s a man lover
She’s a lover’s lover
Hold tight
She’s a wine lover
She’s a cat lover
She’s a massage lover
Alright
V3
On our third date, I invited her over to mine
We planned to watch a film and red red wine
But feeling confident, proposed a massage and she said,
‘Ooh yeah, if you top up my glass’
I worked my hands up and down, side to side
In the joints, round the curves, waxing on, waxing off
Worked the muscles, and the bones, and the glands
And the tendons, and the nerves, it was getting pretty hot
I took my cue from her relaxing moans
It was now or never to start the kissy kissy
I thought I’ll do my bit for Queen and country
Let’s eat out to help out and help my friend Rishi
Mono, poly, swing a brolly, bi or queer, straight or gay
Casual, hook up, I’m all shook up, unicorns and anarchy
We’re the generation swiping on Tinder
And sometimes we don’t follow being socially distanced
CHORUS
She’s a lady lover
She’s a man lover
She’s a lover’s lover
Hold tight
She’s a wine lover
She’s a cat lover
She’s a massage lover
Alright
V4
In the morning, she said, ‘We need to have a chat’
You know it’s never good when someone says that
‘I like you,’ but, ‘life is so busy’
‘With my child and my girlfriend and my pussycat Tiggy’
And so… ‘I know it’s early but a break would be cool’
I thought, ah na, I’m Ross being elbowed by Rachel
‘I’ll be in touch when there’s work and there’s schools’
But I’m not holding my breath for days of old normal
So that’s the story of the girl I matched from OKC
The kiss she asked for still means a lot to me (x2)
Mono, poly, swing a brolly, bi or queer, straight or gay
Casual, hook up, I’m all shook up, unicorns and anarchy
We’re the generation swiping on Tinder
And, God, we really hate being socially distanced
CHORUS (x2)
She’s a lady lover
She’s a man lover
She’s a lover’s lover
Hold tight
She’s a wine lover
She’s a cat lover
She’s a massage lover
Alright
SINGLE #1 - Captain Elon
A satire on the modern world: AI robots, climate change, fake news, and online power.
TRACK OF THE DAY: 'Bloody. Brilliant. Reminds me of 'Yellow Submarine'. It's very ramshackle in the way it's put together and that's what gives it the charm. Love the tongue clicks and percussion! I can imagine this being the theme to a cartoon' - The Songbird and Platinum Mind
'How's that for a tune? Pretty excellent. I love it' - Acacia Radio
'Off-kilter one-man band' - Here Comes The Flood
🚀 'Captain Elon' chords + lyrics
Captain Elon
Captain Elon
Won’t you lead us into outer space and
You can be my Captain Elon
C Em
We’re all living in this world of Elon Musk
F C
Where robots take our jobs cause they’re smarter than us
F C
We should be grateful, and we shouldn’t kick a fuss
Dm G
We’re dying anyway
The planet’s heating, and the ocean’s on the rise
It’ll wipe out Asia and then Europe’s next in line
Come on America, don’t you act surprised
This is the price you’ll pay
So Elon, Elon, won’t you save us from ourselves
Elon, Elon, cause we ain’t got no one else
With your technology, your vision, and your wealth
You could save us all
Captain Elon
Captain Elon
Won’t you lead us into outer space and
You can be my Captain Elon
We’re all living in this world of Elon Musk
There’s nothing in the news today that I can trust
Countries tweeting other countries that they lust
What a perverted state
With every search and every photo that I like
Shows my location and records my porno sites
Power now is telling others what to buy
They got my face and name
So Elon, Elon, won’t you save us from ourselves
Elon, Elon, cause we ain’t got no one else
With your technology, your vision, and your wealth
You could save us all
Captain Elon
Captain Elon
Won’t you lead us into outer space and
You can be my Captain Elon
Captain Elon
Captain Elon
Won’t you lead us into outer space and
You can be my Captain Elon
